THAI CUISINE

THAI CUISINE

Thai cuisine has always been dependent on bordering countries, namely China, Laos, Burma or India. Each of them incorporated in the Thai cuisine their little own particle in the form of delicacy and secrets of the art of cooking. In spite of this, for ages the Thai cooks developed their own principles of creating dishes, although they do not have to follow them strictly. The biggest advantage of Thai cuisine is a great freedom, and at the same time, the need to remember its characteristic features, like aroma and spiciness, which stress the taste of the orient. The Thais , preparing their dishes, use the principle of five flavors. Thai dishes must be spicy, sweet, bitter, sour and salty.

The term of Thai cuisine is not confined only to Thailand. One should not forget that still a considerable number of Thai tribes lives in Vietnam or Laos. Besides, its variety comes do products and ingredients used in a given region. Thailand is divided to north, north-east, south and central. Among the southern dishes dominating is coconut milk and seafood. North is dominated by mild dishes from pork meat and delicate vegetables. The most spicy is the cuisine from north-east. Dishes of this part of Thailand are dominated by a high content of chilli and other outstanding spices.

Regardless of the region of Thailand, the main dish is rice, in particular very aromatic and delicate jasmine rice. It is accompanied by meat and fish additions, which are enriched with aromatic spices or herbs, which can be fresh, dried or milled. Thanks to them, rice has more intensive taste and smell.

Other popular dishes, prepared in accordance with Thai recipe, are yam salads, which do not contain fat, and also the so called pad thai. This, in turn is rice noodles fried with chicken or prawns, which can be bought on almost every street in Bangkok.

THAILAND

Thailand is a specific country, where on every step you find friendly, although reserved people. Thai do not like talking about themselves, but they willingly talk about everything else. They have a huge respect for the elderly and the royal family. Cuisine fulfills a separate role in Thai culture. Thais eat meat, and they are able to prepare food everywhere, few times a day. Thus, Thailand almost smells like food. The important role that cuisine fulfill in Thailand is best reflected in a popular saying which Thai say while greeting, “have you eaten already?” instead of “How are you” or “How do you do”.

You can eat almost everywhere in Thailand. On one market we find exotic fruit, on other, we find grilled chicken and shashliks (satay) or seafood or boiled soups. When visiting Thailand, it is worth to eat a lot in order to try as much as you can and not to regret anything. Thai cuisine varies greatly. Sometimes we can eat something really spicy, to eat something sweet with coconut milk few moments later. Regardless of the type of dish, it is worth knowing how to behave in Thai restaurant. Eating culture is very important to Thais, and many habits, which we get from the European cuisine can be misunderstood in Thailand.

The biggest problem we can have with fork, which should not be held in the right hand, but in left hand. Using fork for eating is considered to be savage. It serves only to put the dish on… the spoon. Thais have nothing to do knife when having meal, because they do not need it. Food, also meat, is cut into small pieces.

Thai cuisine culture implicates that when receiving the plate with food, we should always use right hand for it, because the left one is considered “dirty”. We also should not reach above someone’s head, since it is considered impolite. Due to respect for elderly people, the senior is the first one to get the food. Nobody however starts a meal until everyone sitting by the same table gets their food as well.
